Co-design and Participatory Public Space Design
Listening-based design forms the core approach for understanding citizens’ needs and adapting interventions to the local urban reality. Participatory processes engage the community in decision-making regarding public space, ensuring that their perspectives are heard and integrated. Co-design processes, in turn, foster close collaboration among residents, technical experts, and institutions, enabling the development of joint, contextualized, and adaptable solutions. This methodology helps address the challenges of vulnerable urban areas and creates public spaces that are more open, resilient, and the result of collective, shared responsibility.
Through this line of work, CRAL provides local administrations with guidance and support in designing citizen participation or co-design processes at all scales, whether related to territorial and urban management or specific programs for public spaces and facilities.
